Historic Status Approved

On May 8th 2019, at their regular quarterly meeting in Palm Springs, California, the State Historical Resources Commission designated Belmont Square in Los Angeles a resource and accepted it for official listing in the California State Historical Resource Register.

Belmont Square is a historical resource under Criterion 3, an important courtyard residential complex designed by architect David Julius Witmer (1888-1973) during the streetcar-influenced suburbanization of Los Angeles.

Belmont Square is a unique and an invaluable property type within the context of residential development in Los Angeles as it represents a notable response to the contradictory pressures inherent in urban Los Angeles: 1) accommodating increased density while appealing to those seeking affordable housing and 2) integrating living spaces in the mild climate and landscape of Los Angeles.
